Today, a great number of mental health professionals who work with infertile couples, professional organizations and the governmental agencies of some countries recommends psychological counseling previous infertility treatment, inclusive in some countries like in Victoria, Australia and Canada is part of the legislation since this alternative of familiar construction can have severe implications for the receiving couple, the children and the donors. In Victoria, Australia the legislation demands that the receiving couple must have a previous psychological counseling previous treatment and delimits that the following topics are treated:

  1. Information about legal, psychological and ethical aspects that are involved in the insemination with donor.
  2. Possible results of the treatment.
  3. Implications that can arise for the family when using an anonymous donor versus a well-known donor.
  4. The situations that can arise for the biological children born in different families.
  5. The suggestion that the children who born by insemination using a sperm donor must being informed on the origin of the donor.
  6. That the boy has the access to information about the donor when he turns 18 years old, in the countries that are possible.
This mandate is understood in this country like essential so that the couple can make informed decisions. Canada has a very similar legislation, in New Zealand infertile couples attending for a previous psychological counseling, although it is not obligatory according to the law. Including in Great Britain all the clinics dedicated to the infertility must provide this service accessible to the patients and some of them demand that their couples receive it. However, since the psychological counseling in infertility continues being a relatively new field; sometimes it is difficult to find specialist on mental health in this field, that can provide this counseling, many doctors do not see the necessity of this service and many couples are resistant to be submitted to this evaluation by a variety of reasons, between which this “stigma” to receive services of mental health.
