Abnormal semen quality or sexual dysfunctions are contributing factors in about half of infertile couples. A male factor, alone, is responsible in approximately 30%.
Semen analysis is the cornerstone of male fertility assessment and it is often the trigger to refer patients for a specialist opinion. It is optimal to send semen samples to laboratories linked with infertility services.
To perform a correctly semen analysis the patient must have abstinence (no ejaculations) 2 or 3 days before collection. The sample must be collected by masturbation or by intercourse using a special condom, without any spermicide substances. It can be collected at home or in laboratory, and must be analyzed within 1 hour of collection.
Normal seminal analysis (World Health Organization): Volume: 1.5 – 5 ml
PH: >7.2
Sperm concentration: > 20mill/ml
Sperm total motile count: > 10mill.
Sperm Motility: 40%
Sperm morphology :> 30%
